Federal court is much more formal than the California Superior Court and most other state courts.  Shorts, halters, tank tops, any clothing exposing the midriff or underclothing, beachwear, flip-flops, pool shoes, or t-shirts with inappropriate graphics or wording are not recommended. Neat, business casual clothing is fine. Suits, ties and other formal clothing are not necessary.

In the courtroom, communication between family members and inmates in custody will cause the courtroom security officers to remove family members from the courtroom. Children may come to court provided that they remain quiet and seated. Courtroom security officers will remove family members and friends who attempt to speak directly to the judge or who are otherwise loud or disruptive.
